When you're refinishing a set of wheels, the first real decision is how the colour goes on. Powder coating and wet paint both produce a durable factory-quality finish, but they're different processes with genuinely different strengths — and the right answer depends on how you drive and what you want the wheels to look like.

How powder coating works
Powder coating applies dry pigment electrostatically — the wheel is charged, the powder sticks to it, and the whole thing goes into an oven where the powder melts and cures into a single continuous film.
That process is why it's tough. The cured film is thicker and harder than sprayed paint, which means better resistance to the specific things that kill wheel finishes: brake dust, road salt, gravel chips, and the harsh alkaline wheel cleaners people use to deal with the first two. On BC roads — winter salt in the Interior, constant wet in the Lower Mainland, gravel on Island highways — that resistance matters.
The trade-offs are real though. Powder is cured at high temperature, so it isn't appropriate for every wheel or every component. Some specialty finishes and very precise multi-stage OEM colours are harder to reproduce in powder than in liquid paint. And when powder does get damaged, you generally strip and redo the wheel rather than blending a small repair.
How wet painting works
Wet paint is sprayed in liquid form and cures through evaporation and chemical hardening, typically in a base coat plus clear coat system — the same approach used on your car's bodywork.
Its advantage is control. Liquid paint can hit colours powder struggles with, including the multi-layer metallics and pearls many manufacturers use. We colour-match with a spectrophotometer, which reads your existing finish and reproduces it precisely — that's how a single repaired wheel ends up indistinguishable from the other three.
Paint is also more forgiving to repair. A localized flaw can often be sanded, blended, and re-cleared without redoing the entire wheel.
The cost is durability. A quality painted wheel holds up well, but the film is softer than cured powder and will show chips and swirls sooner under the same abuse.
Which should you choose?
Choose powder coating if you drive year-round in harsh conditions, park on the street, rack up highway kilometres, or simply want to refinish once and stop thinking about it. It's also the sensible default for a full colour change — going gloss black, bronze, gunmetal, or a satin finish across all four wheels.
Choose wet paint if you're matching a factory finish exactly on one or two wheels, your OEM colour is a complex metallic or pearl, or the wheel has components that can't take oven temperatures.
In practice, a lot of jobs are decided by what's already on the wheel. If you're having curb rash repair done on a single wheel of a matched set, precise colour matching usually points to paint. If you're refinishing all four and want maximum lifespan, powder wins.

What about diamond cut wheels?
Diamond-cut wheels are a third category. The face is machined on a CNC lathe to expose bright bare aluminum, then sealed under clear coat — the finish is the metal itself, not a colour applied over it.
They look exceptional, but they're the highest-maintenance option. Once the clear coat is compromised, moisture reaches the aluminum and causes the cloudy white oxidation that spreads under the coating. On BC's wet coast that's a genuine consideration. Many owners of diamond-cut wheels eventually convert to powder coat specifically to stop fighting oxidation.
Making either finish last
- Wash wheels regularly with mild soap and water — removing brake dust before it bakes on does more than any product you apply afterward
- Skip harsh acidic or high-alkaline wheel cleaners, which attack clear coats on every finish type
- Avoid abrasive pads and brushes; a soft microfiber mitt is enough on a healthy finish
- Keep high-pressure washers off the finish at close range, especially around the edges
- Address chips early, before moisture works underneath the coating
